Strategic Human Resource Management Assignment - Individual Essay
An important aspect of developing any corporate strategy is HR planning and workforce development.
An organisation's HR strategy is critical for the effective recruitment, retention, and development of their future workforce.
This task requires you to analyse the HR strategy of a chosen organisation, and respond to the set questions.
This assessment provides you with three examples of contemporary organisations, with information for all three organisations being available on the Moodle site. You are asked to select one of the organisations and discuss the following:
1. Outline the rationale of embedding HR strategies into broader corporate strategies.
2. Analyse how HR strategy is embedded in the broader corporate strategy of your chosen organisation.
3. Discuss how the organisation may implement their HR strategy at the departmental level.
4. Discuss some of the contemporary HR challenges facing your chosen organisation (and how these have either prompted the development of, or necessitate changes to, their current HR strategy).
Question 1 - Outline the rationale of embedding HR strategies into broader corporate strategies.
This question requires you to provide an explanation for why companies in general would want to embed their HR strategy into their broader corporate strategy.
You do not need to refer to your chosen company in answering this question.
You should rely almost entirely on academic sources for this question, as you are simply providing the rationale for why embedding HR strategies into corporate strategies is a good idea.
However, you may choose to use some non-academic sources if you are using specific examples to help illustrate the rationale.
Question 2 - Analyse how HR strategy is embedded in the broader corporate strategy of your chosen organisation.
This question requires you to explain what the HR strategy of your chosen organisation is (as best as you can tell from the information available).
You are also required to analyse how the HR strategy that you have identified appears to be embedded within the broader corporate strategy.
You will rely mostly on non-academic sources for this section, but can still use academic sources to support the use of specific HR concepts identified within the HR strategy of the organisation.
Question 3 - Discuss how the organisation may implement their HR strategy at the departmental level.
This question requires you to analyse the HR strategy at a more in- depth level, looking for evidence of how the HR strategy is implemented within specific departments of the organisation.
Instead of 'departments' you may need to look at specific employee groups, national branches, project teams, or other ways of structuring the organisation.
Again, this section may require mostly non-academic sources, but you should be able to include academic sources to support the use of specific HR concepts that you have identified.
Question 4 - Discuss some of the contemporary HR challenges facing your chosen organisation (and how these have either prompted the development of, or necessitate changes to, their current HR strategy).
This question requires you to consider the challenges that are facing your chosen organisation.
If there are challenges that they have already met/are in the process of meeting, you should be able to identify what actions they have already taken, and then suggest what actions they could take in the future.
If the challenges you identify have not been addressed at all, then your recommendations should focus on what you believe the organisation will need to do in order to remain successful.
Regardless of what kind of challenges you identify, you will need to clearly demonstrate what actions the organisation has taken/should take in terms of their HR strategy.
