Questions: This assignment should be about five pages to six pages (about one thousand three hundred to one thousand five hundred words; there is no penalty for exceeding this), plus a list of references
Step 1 : Video
Five Eyes: How the multinational spy network has grown since 9/11
STEP 2. Brainstorm the Video Basic audio transcript . Are there any important metaphors, symbols, strong emotions invoked, and so on? Be creative and brainstorm at this stage. Consider what kinds of feelings or emotions it invokes for you. Are the various phases of the four-phase universal narrative schema apparent?
STEP 3. Universal Narrative Schema (one to two pages)
analyse the chosen video. While this narrative schema is intended to provide a more structured approach to analysis, youu still have to be creative in your interpretation. Youu can think of the schema as an interpretative tool. Make sure youu include the following four phases of the narrative schema. It is important to remember that sometimes a phase and its actants may not directly stated and so only implied. So if youu think that the phase is missing then mention that and why you think that is so; do not just leave it blank.
1. Manipulation phase (creates a situation of having-to-do or wanting-to-do): First identify the main quest and goal of the video narrative. On the transcript, I have already identified who is the sender of the quest and who is the receiver of the quest for each video.
2. Competence phase (the receiver demonstrates being-able-to-do or knowing-how-to-do in order to obtain the object of the quest): How does the receiver carry out the quest? Briefly identify the different subnarratives, particularly what helpers or allies does the receiver gain? What opponents and/or obstacles do they face?
3. Performance (to-do): Does the receiver complete the quest or not?
4. Sanction (evaluation by the sender or those representing the sender): How does the sender reward or punish the receiver? In each of the above narrative phases, identify the relevant actants (micro and macro level), human and nonhuman and how are they present? In the above set of steps, try to creatively interpret the video using this framework. It is meant as a general interpretative framework
STEP 4. Discourse Analysis (two to three pages)
This analytical approach considers the social and political meaning of the content. You should do some basic background research about the video to contextualize it. Two or three sentences should suffice. Make sure you cite all sources and include them in the list of references.
Use any 4 of the following concepts that are relevant to your analysis:
1. Dominant discourses and resistance discourses. e.g. Neoliberal, imperialist, anticolonial, anti-imperialist, human rights.
2. Racial, Ethnic or Religious Othering or Stereotyping: Depicting racially, ethnically or religiously defined populations as threats.
3. Foregrounding/backgrounding, omission: who is excluded and included?
4. Gender codes, stereotypes and patriarchal discourse.
5. Social Norms and Values: What norms appear and what values inform these norms.
6. Ideological strategies: naturalization, reification, euphemism, dehumanization, etc.
7. Intersectionality
8. Mythical Norm
9. Metaphors and analogies can be important.
10. Any other concepts you consider to be relevant from the readings or class discussions. Discourse analysis is a vast field so do not try to include more than four concepts. Grades will be given not for the quantity of concepts used, but rather for the skill with which they are utilized. As well, feel free to improvise and be creative in your interpretation. For example, if you see a pattern you of interest think about how it links to our discussions in class, with the course readings, theoretical paradigms or concepts you have learned about in another course. Warning: Do not summarize or describe the video, analyse it.
STEP 5. Conclusion (one page to two pages)
This is the part of the paper where we consider the potential sociological significance of the video. Make sure to include the following: Consider how the two different methodological approaches in Step 3 and 4 contributed to your analysis. What sociological paradigms (structural functionalism, conflict theory, feminism etc.) and concepts does your analysis fit with or not? Are there any questions you think would be interesting to research further? This is your opportunity to use your sociological imagination to explain what you consider to be the significance of this video. Grades in this section will be aimed more at synthesis that combines ideas into a coherent and persuasive analysis of the sociological significance of the video (i.e. do not just summarize or describe the video).
