Assignment - Understanding Migration in Singapore: Foreign Domestic Worker Interview

The Essay is about foreign domestic workers in Singapore. Since she cannot interview a FDW (Foreign Domestic Worker), research about them and write about what they think and what is happening in the world.

Background - Many women migrate to Singapore from less economically developed countries (LEDCs) to work as Foreign Domestic Workers (FDWs) in order to improve themselves and their family's situation. Their migration experience encompasses many of the topics we have discussed in this unit including opportunities and challenges, types of migration, push and pull factors, changes to place of origin and destination and obstacles to migration.

The Service Department at UWC has developed partnerships with organisations that support FDWs in an attempt help them to gain a wider breadth of opportunity. For example, each Sunday Grade 11 students work with HOME (Humanitarian Organization for Migration Economics) to support FDWs in learning new skills such as improving their English proficiency. They are looking for resources to help the Grade 11 students understand more about FDW's in Singapore.

Task details - You will conduct primary and secondary research and consider the reasons for, and the impact of, migration of FDWs to Singapore by inquiring into:

Reasons for migration.

Opportunities and challenges with the migration experience.

New skills that may be gained due to the migration experience.

How the migration has an impact on Singapore and their place of origin.

How the migration experience might impact future plans.

Using the information you have gathered, write a letter to a Grade 11 student who is considering joining the HOME Local Service group so they can better understand the migration experience of FDWs, the impact on origin and destination and highlight the importance of what HOME is doing. Pull and pull factors were explained in a comprehensive manner. Many opportunities and challenges were explained when looking at the migration stories of FDW’s showing the variety and complexity of their stories. A range of complex and deep understanding and conclusions are presented. A sophisticated level of analysis and interpretation was completed to draw conclusions which included both straightforward and complex ideas and were based on all the data presented. The letter was communicated in a concise and highly effective manner, with terminology from the unit and connections to other terms and concepts used correctly and in a sophisticated manner.
