Assignment

This assignment requires to interview a family member. You MUST submit a detailed report of your meeting with your volunteer family and how the information they provide will be used, and a completed self critique form with narrative to be eligible for full credit! A transcript IS required. Recording must be 45 minutes. I do not need to see the recorded session, but if I have questions, I may ask to see the recording. I uploaded a self-critique you need to complete for the Family Counseling meeting/intake interview session.

For Mental Health students:

Have a meeting with a family that is more of an intake interview, gathering biopsychosocial information about the family members. (a guide to the biopsychosocial interview is attached)The purposes of the biopsychosocial family intake/interview are:

a. to help you get experience interviewing more than one individual at a time, gathering information about those present as well as those unable to be present in the meeting

b. to help the family members increase their awareness of their family's patterns and dynamics as evident in the biological, psychological and social information they provide about each member of their immediate family

c. to learn more about creating an atmosphere in which family members will feel comfortable enough to engage in discussion and disclose information that is important to this process

A 'transcript' is a word for word report of what was said by therapist and clients during a session. It is long and somewhat tedious but it is invaluable in helping you critique yourself. I recommend taping the session, then transcribing it. Use the format of a play such as:

Counselor: Hi, how are you all today.

Client (mother): We're good (stretching out her hand to shake therapist's.

Client (daughter): Good

Counselor: Won't you have a seat? I am so glad you came today. How can I be of help today?

Client (daughter): She made me come! (pointing to mother)

Client (mother): Hush! I told you not to talk today.
