Question: "Religious leaders during the 18th and 19th century played a huge role in shaping women's participation in physical activity and sports during this era. This was a time when Christian views were tightly associated with daily views of what it meant to be a citizen that participated in society. It was believed that for men and women to work coherently together in society there was certain roles that needed to be taken by men and women. This would show it self to be that women would take up house work and taking care of the children while men would go out and do the jobs that provided for the family. This spoke to the virtues that a women has in their role in society and it was believed that this was crucial in order for society to prevail. Despite this women were never thought to be equal to men physical or intellectually so many positions of power where still held by men and women were not allowed a say in these areas. Dated ideas of how the female body worked also shaped their participation in sports as well. As before Title IX was introduced competitive sports was dominated by men
