The 2020 presidential election was determined not by the popular vote, but by the vote of the Electoral College. In this assignment, we will explore how the Electoral College determines the outcome of elections and how this influences the way in which presidential candidates conduct their campaigns.

  1. Go to the website to access the 2024 Presidential Election Interactive Map. The map divides up states into ones that are likely to vote Republican (in red), likely to vote Democratic (in blue), and are considered tossups (in brown) in the 2024 presidential election.
  2. Beginning with the map that has the Democratic candidate as having 209 likely Electoral College votes and the Republican candidate as having 125 likely Electoral College votes, change some of the tossup states of the electoral map such that a Republican wins the 2024 election. In order for a candidate to win the Electoral College vote, the candidate must win at least 270 electoral votes. In the report that you submit for this assignment, list the states that you changed from tossup to Republican in the 2024 election to allow a Republican to win the election. Include a screenshot of the Electoral College map in your report.
  3. Reset your Electoral College map back to the original 2024 Electoral College map by clicking on the "Reset Map" button on the right side of the screen under the heading "User-Created Map". Change the result of that map such that a Republican wins the states of Florida, Georgia, and Ohio. With those changes made, create an Electoral map by changing other tossup states where, given that the Republican candidate wins Florida, Georgia, and Ohio, the Democratic candidate gets at least 270 Electoral College votes and wins the election. Include a screenshot of the Electoral College map that accomplishes this with your report. In the report that you submit for this assignment, list the states that were changed from tossup to Democratic in order for the Democrat to win this election.
  4. Reset your Electoral College map back to the 2024 Electoral College map by clicking on the "Reset Map" button on the right side of the screen under the heading "User-Created Map". Change the results in that map (you can change tossup states, Republican states, and/or Democratic states) such that an Electoral College tie (269 to 269) occurs. Include a screenshot of the Electoral College map that accomplishes this tie with your report.
  5. Describe how the president and vice president would be chosen in the event of an Electoral College tie.
