Question: Create a health educational resource around a specific topic for a target audience. Choose the type of resource you would like to create.
In addition, your supervisor has requested that you create a resource brief explaining the decisions made as you developed the resource. This community resource and resource brief will serve as guidance for my team as it develops additional resources.
Specifically, address the following:
Community Resource: I have been tasked with creating an original resource that educates an audience about a specific health topic. My supervisor clarified that, essentially, I should craft information about the selected health topic and communicate it in a way that is appropriate for my audience. In addition, she asked that I remember that the intent of I resource is to educate the audience in the hopes of improving its health literacy. While I develop my resource, be sure that the resource is not culturally limiting, meaning your resource should not be insulting or exclusionary toward any particular race, gender, culture, and so on. As I develop the community resource, I need to be sure to address the following:
These are my target groups:
1-Lower Valley Middle Schoolers: Smoking
2-Lower Valley Healthcare Center: Tobacco use
3-Lower Valley Senior Citizens Center: Tobacco use
o Develop accurate content that specifically addresses the selected health topic and provides the audience an actionable item. As you develop the content, consider the following:
- Is the information from credible sources?
- Does the content provide an appropriate amount of information about the topic?
- Did I create a SMART goal to clearly communicate the actionable item?
o Communicate the health information to the target audience using audience-appropriate language and design that is inclusive. As I develop your resource, consider the following:
- How does the font and language structure of the resource communicate the information to the audience?
- Could the language alienate an individual of a particular culture?
- Are you using general terminology and language, rather than healthcare jargon?
- Is the language at the appropriate level for the audience?
o Use images and graphics that are appropriate for your target audience and issue and do not exclude individuals of the population. As you select images and graphics, consider the following:
- Can the population identify with the images and graphics?
- Could the images and graphics alienate individuals of a particular culture?
- Are the images and graphics accessible to all individuals?
- Resource Brief: In addition to asking you to develop the community resource, your supervisor asked that you describe your decision-making process throughout, identifying the key considerations that you made to ensure your resource is appropriate for your audience. This information will be key to informing the future development of community resources and ensuring that these resources are of high value to the intended population. As you develop your resource brief, be sure to address the following:
o Explain why your target population needs education on the topic. Be sure to support your claims with evidence.
o Explain why the type of resource you chose is appropriate for your audience. Be sure to support your claims with evidence.
o Explain how the language used in the resource is culturally appropriate for your target audience. Be sure to support your claims with evidence.
o Explain how the content in the resource promotes health literacy for your audience. Be sure to support your claims with evidence.
