Case Study#1: Betty Smith

Betty smith arrived at the doctor complaining of nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. The healthcare provider obtained her vital signs, height, weight, chief complaint, and current list of medications. Betty was waiting in the exam room when she began vomiting on the exam table and floor.

The healthcare provider cleaned up the mess using a special disinfectant. Betty was diagnosed with gastroenteritis caused by exposure to salmonella from contaminated food.

Identify how the Chaim of infection links, when unbroken, lead to the infection in a patient. Students must identify each link and explain how the organism leaves the reservoir and enters the host. When asked to describe how the chain was broken again the student must identify each of the links and describe how the link was broken to prevent the spread of the disease.
