Case Study: Coca Colas Water Usage in India
This week we will be covering the case of Coca Cola and its water use in India. Coca Cola has a long and controversial history in India, as it has frequently been accused of both depleting ground water and polluting the local environment in the surrounds of its bottling plants, We will be discussing the case study in classes this week with the aid of several concepts that we will be delivering in lectures and tutorials: sustainability, environmental equity, market externalities, and greenwashing.
You must refer to this case study in your first assignment (alongside a more general discussion of the concepts of the module). Ask yourself how the case study convinces you one way or another about whether firms have a social responsibility beyond making profit? Is it Coca Cola's responsibility to avoid the harms caused by its environmental practices, or are other parties responsible?
