Employee Health and Safety
Prepare a report and present a proposal to meet the requirements listed below. Please refer to the relevant chapters from the textbook to prepare this assignment. In addition, you are required to research other reliable sources such as academic journals, CCOHS, NIOSH among others to get in-depth knowledge about the subject you choose to work on.
Purpose: The purpose of this GROUP assignment is to allow you to:
• understand categories of Stress identified by the NIOSH model and related interventions;
•specifically, learn about stressors faced by employees working at different levels and positions;
•identify the resources provided by their workplace, and the community, to assist employees in managing their stress.
Background:
A survey conducted on behalf of the Mental Health Commission of Canada (MHCC), found that many people in Canada have seen their stress levels double since the onset of COVID-19, with fears over physical well-being and personal finances cited as the primary reasons. Nearly 40 per cent reported that their mental health is worse or somewhat worse than before the outbreak. But, despite their self-awareness, more than three in four people reported that, over the last month (May 2020), they have almost never or never sought mental health information online. Assignment Overview: As workplaces started opening, employers had to consider the social distancing rules and new safety rules for their employees, clients and customers. In the midst of these changes, employees were experiencing stress due to the pandemic and likely to experience work related stress from the changed realities of work.
Hypotheses:
1. Certain jobs (such as healthcare), might have higher levels of stress, analyze why? 2. Certain jobs might have lower levels of stress, analyze why?
3. In what ways does work / a person's position impact the level of stress experienced by an individual?
Report: Research and Discuss the Theory, you are to research academic articles using the Library resources (valid articles using google scholar not more than 7 years old) while considering the three hypotheses listed above. It is recommended you review the textbook (Kelloway, Management of Occupational Health and Safety 8thedition) chapters 7 and 14 to work on this assignment. Prepare a report addressing the following:
a. Provide a brief discussion about what stress is, apply the NIOSH model to current circumstances facing employees in different jobs and at different levels in workplaces.
b. Find at least four (4) academic journal articles(these should not benewspaper, textbook reviews, or magazine articles or similar) which are no more than 7 years old and are relevant to the three hypotheses stated above.
c. List the four academic journal articles you selected by title and add the link below the title. This is necessary to differentiate the articles you selected from other sources.
d. For each article:
- State the title and author(s). Briefly summarize it in 3-4 paragraphs each starting with the title and relevant sub-titles. This is a summary which means you are to explain what the article is about and why it is relevant. You must discuss the key findings, why this article is relevant such as demographics studied or other. However, you need not discuss the methodology used to conduct the research or analyze results.
- Analyze the findings and discuss their relevance for workplaces, stress and work-related stressors.
- Discuss how the article relates to the three hypotheses. For example, does it provide support to one or more of the hypotheses? Or the researchers' findings point in a different direction?
e. Identify interventions you would recommend that can be implemented in the workplace, in the community and at home? Identify the resources/ services which can be provided by workplaces to help employees deal with stress. How effective are they - what may be their limitations?
f. In conclusion, as workplaces haveresumed normal operations what should employers consider in terms of the discussion above.
