Question: Wealth is not just about luxury. It plays a significant role in shaping a family's life chances and creating opportunities - in ways we often don't notice. Currently, the typical white family has about 13 times the wealth of the typical African American family. Even in the same income bracket, whites have on average twice the wealth of Blacks. Much of the difference lies in the value of their homes. This activity explores how structural racism - in the form of a history of discriminatory government housing policies and practices - helped create the racial wealth gap.
