Assignment:

1. In Chapter (text, and heavily discussed in lecture), there is much coverage of social groups. Using some of those concepts (at least two), consider how social groups might function in prisons. (Additional module materials give you lots of info on prisons in the U.S.).

2. Use the information to consider prisons as institutions (see discussion of Goffman and Foucault and integrate their theories).

3. Use the module materials and the TED talk to reflect on our prison and criminal justice system.

3. Considering what you wrote for the above (#'s 2 and 3), apply one of the theories in this chapter to explain some of the dynamics you discuss. (I go over crime/deviance theories in the lecture). Let me know that you understand the foundational ideas of the theory but detailing it a bit, and then use those ideas to explain.
