Task: Explaining in big longer paragraphs using text referencing how the social determinants of health might impact a person developing a chronic health condition, remembering that the social determinants of health are known as 'the causes of the causes.' In other words, specific social determinants or social conditions will shape the development of modifiable risk factors that lead to the health condition developing for Coronary heart disease
Analyse how two of the following social determinants affect the development of the condition: Socio-economic position, Work, Stress or Food insecurity
This relates to the following topic learning outcomes:
TLO1: Apply a basic epidemiological lens to health and wellbeing in Australia.
TLO2: Apply the social model of health to understand the lived experiences of health, disease, and illness in Australia.
Scope
This should include:
- An overview of current Australian epidemiological data such as prevalence (rate) of the health condition, a description of the distribution of the disease frequency across population groups (e.g. by geographical areas), and the trend in prevalence rates over time.
- Definition of the social model of health and explanation of why this framework is useful. A description of social determinants of health that are relevant to the health condition selected (Coronary Heart Disease)
- An analysis of how those selected social determinants might positively and/or negatively shape the development of the health condition.
- Primary academic sources to support the information used in the essay where possible.
Format and Referencing
- APA 7 referencing throughout, for both in text citations and the reference list.
- high quality sources, i.e., government reports from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) or the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW), peer-reviewed journal articles, and textbook chapters. Multiple chapters from a single text will be treated as a single source.
- DO NOT source general information about the health condition from websites that aim to inform the general population. In other words, do not use Mayo Clinic, WebMD, World Health Organization (WHO), Health Direct, Healthline, Better Health Channel or similar websites, or AIHW reports. Instead, access medical textbooks or medical encyclopaedias.
- Websites such as the Australian Government Department of Health and state-based Departments of Health will have general information about health conditions but DO NOT use these sources either for general information about the health condition.
- Refer to the Curtin APA 7 referencing guide for how full references are presented in APA 7 style - no bullet points, no numbering, no footnotes, 'hanging' paragraph so that the first author 'hangs' out and is easily seen, in alphabetical order according to the first author of each source.
- Subheadings are recommended.
