Several "Pink tides" have swept across Latin America in the 21st Century, with new Socialist, progressive, and other leftist Presidents winning power. However, unlike their predecessors in the 1960's and 1970's, these Presidents mostly finished their terms and saw peaceful, election-based transitions of power. In other cases, these Presidents consolidated semi-authoritarian regimes and effectively ended democracy in their countries. How should we understand these very different outcomes? What has changed?
