CASE: Marissa
Scenario A: Marissa and her best friend Amanda are roommates. Both are seniors at The University of Iowa. Both will graduate at the end of the current semester. Amanda has been accepted to Johns Hopkins Medical School. Her acceptance depends on her grades from the semester. Amanda's father has offered Marissa a summer internship at his public relations and graphic design firm, which she is very much looking forward to because the internship will provide valuable experience and connections that may lead to a future job. Amanda is taking an online course to complete her minor in Spanish. Amanda's boyfriend took the same course a year ago. Amanda confides in Marissa that she's been so busy with her other classes and getting ready to move back home after graduation that she asked her boyfriend Michael to write her final paper for the course. Marissa says that she's disappointed that Amanda had to resort to cheating during her final semester of classes. Amanda says, "Well, it's not really cheating; I've done all the work on the rest of the assignments and passed all the exams. I really just didn't have the time to put into the final paper, so I asked Michael for help. Just to save time, that's all. It's not like I couldn't have done the work." Marissa knows that Amanda could easily have written a passing paper in the course.
Scenario B: Same as above, except there wasn't another person writing the paper, instead Amanda was using ChatGPT or another AI generated tool.
