Assignment: Responses to others should focus on the commonalities and differences regarding the ethical considerations presented from both Luann's and Jim's perspectives. Do I agree with the options posted regarding how Jim may be able to address this issue and how he should approach the branch manager with his findings? What insight have I gained from the suggestions offered to safeguard cash on hand at the credit union? What additional suggestions can I offer?
Ethical Considerations
From Luann's (Teller's) Perspective
According to Luann, she took the money to afford a subscription for her son and secure groceries. She seemed more concerned about the welfare of her son and family at the expense of following the legally/procedurally accepted ways of obtaining money from the drawers. Taking the money that way was unprocedural, but it was meant to save his son and family.
From Jim's (Lead Teller) Perspective
Jim, in the course of his duty, realizes a deficit in Luann's teller. Luann responded by claiming that she took the money for her son's prescription and groceries and that she was to refund the money by payday. Procedurally, he is supposed to report Luann for misconduct. However, Luann has given a justification for her actions, and Jim is torn between reporting to the manager and letting it go unreported.
Options available for Jim
Luann has engaged in professional misconduct. Therefore, Jim can either deal with her as the lead teller and reprimand her or report her to the Branch manager for administrative action.
How should Jim approach the issue with his boss
Jim must investigate the incident accordingly and obtain the necessary facts. Thereafter, he should document the incident and report it to the boss. He should not just report the incident but prescribe possible solutions to avoid future occurrences of such conduct.
Ideas to safeguard cash on hand at the credit union
Cash on hand performs various vital functions in every organization (Wild & Shaw, 2021). As such, its existence is inevitable. The credit union should apply the following approaches to try to safeguard its cash on hand:
- The credit union should restrict access to such money to as few individuals as possible.
- There should be frequent cash count exercises.
- Encourage handlers of cash to open up in case of pressing issues.
- Eliminate cash on handheld overnight.
