Question: The term death characterizes Hamlet as a man obsessed with death. Death is a significant motif in the play, and Hamlet is consumed by it. He is continuously contemplating the nature of mortality and debating life and death. He obsesses on death, namely his own death, pondering how it would be preferable to die than live in a world of misery. It is a motif that continues beyond the sad climax of the play and haunts the whole story since it is a continual presence in the eponymous character's consciousness. Hamlet's fixation with death is clear from the start of the play, "I'll call thee "Hamlet," "King," "Father," "royal Dane." O, answer me! Let me not burst in ignorance, but tell. Why thy canonized bones, hearsed in death, Have burst their cerements(Shakespeare)." The quest of vengeance for his father's death demonstrates Hamlet's fixation with death. He is obsessed by ideas of vengeance and eventually dies in pursuit of it. Hamlet's obsession with death and vengeance is evident in his soliloquies, in which he considers the consequences of his deeds and the morality of vengeance. He often questions whether it is preferable to endure the world's wrongs or take action to remedy them. The term death is an appropriate characterization of Hamlet's character since it captures the play's overarching topic of mortality and its influence on the protagonist. Hamlet also uses this term in act 3, scene 1, speaking of the cowardness of fearing death, "death, The undiscovered country from whose bourn no traveler returns puzzles the will. And makes us rather bear those ills we have Than fly to others that we know not of? Thus conscience does make cowards of us all(Shakespeare)." Hamlet uses this keyword to laminate himself as a weakling who can not decide whether to kill Claudius or himself. Shakespeare characterizes Hamlet as a man of inaction who never makes an effort to escape the burden he is under. The overall point of the term "death" is that it is a strong force that prevents people from making choices and actions. It is a force that weighs heavily on the mind and may paralyze individuals, preventing them from acting. The relevance of this term is to demonstrate how death and dread of the hereafter may drive individuals to remain motionless.
