Discussion: Animal Rights Imagine you visit a distant planet where you find a civilization of highly advanced aliens treating human beings as animals. Imagine these aliens use human beings to carry things on their backs from place to place. Imagine they like to keep some of them as house pets. Imagine they conduct experiments on them against their will. And then last but not least, imagine you come to find that these aliens eat human beings. Imagine you visit some of their farms only to find large groups of human beings slaughtered. Imagine you go to some of the butcher shops and find dead skinless humans hanging upside down for display. You go inside and find them selling human legs, thighs, breasts, etc.

Imagine, outraged, you decide to complain to one of the aliens about all of the cruelty. The alien responds by stating that they are doing nothing wrong because human beings are an excellent source of protein. And furthermore, human beings, according to them, are an intellectually inferior species and so it is perfectly fine. And lastly, this is exactly what human beings do to other animals on planet earth.

Does this alien have a good point? How should human beings behave towards animals? Should we eat them; use them for work; experiment on them? Why or why not?
