The statue pictured below (and linked here in case your browser does not show the below images or if you want to see it in more detail or from different angles) was erected in 1876 to commemorate the end of slavery. Although the formerly enslaved raised the funds to erect the statue, they did not have a say in the white sculptor's design. Since its unveiling, Black Americans have roundly hated it.

In the summer of 2020, activists demanded its removal and a copy of the statue in Boston (top left) has been removed. The original in D.C. (top right) requires federal approval to be removed and thus remains and was put under guard during the protests in the summer of 2020 (bottom). What's wrong with this statue? What view of history does it depict? Why might it be opposed by both those who had lived through emancipation and Black people still today? How should emancipation be commemorated?
