Case Study: As much as Barbara loved her job as a Medical Office Assistant, she knew she eventually would want to move on from there and probably work in Billing and Reimbursement. She helped Carol out quite a bit, who was a biller and coder, and thought it was a lot like having to try and solve a puzzle. She also felt excited that Carol was willing to show her what the job entailed and trusted her with a few tasks.

Carol stated, "No matter what, you need to appeal every denial that we get from the insurance company. Look at it this way, if the doctor doesn't get paid, you don't get paid." In addition, Carol instructed Barbara on her on how she would handle the next set of tasks. She stated, "It doesn't matter what reports you run first. Just so you get it done. We'll worry about the details later." When Barbara stopped to question the office procedures, Carol let be known that she didn't care what she had been told, but that her instructions were the way to do things.
