It establishes a proposition or thesis and presents a point of view based on evidence. An essay is written in a logically structured and factual way. At a minimum you are required to analyse and evaluate at least THREE academic articles. Those aiming for higher grades will be required to critically review additional high quality sources.

It should be emphasised though that the quality of the source and your analytical skills (what you do with the material) is far more important than the number of sources. In other words you need to be very careful to avoid PLONKING citations in your essay without critical engagement with it.
