Assignment consists of TWO (2) parts:
Part A Questions: Essay Questions
Assignment: Part A
All essays must be appropriately referenced. Essays will be marked for content and referencing of sources as well as proper grammar, punctuation and spelling.
The indicated word lengths in Part A questions are a general guideline, with <=5% (shorter or longer) tolerance allowed.
Essays should include relevant referenced sources beyond course specific material, i.e. not just the course textbook or notebooks. Many relevant sources are provided in the course textbooks and notebooks.

A2: The Scientific Stance
In Chapter 4 of The Truthful Art, Alberto Cairo discusses the scientific stance. He describes it as ‘... a way to look at the world, that everybody and anybody, regardless of cultural origins or background can embrace'. Write a short essay (~600 words) discussing how scientific discovery works.
Include in your essay a discussion about the different types of studies and how randomization can be useful to deal with extraneous variables.
Provide appropriate references and examples to support your discussion.
A3: Trend, Seasonality and Noise
In Chapter 8: Revealing Change, Cairo points out three features that you should pay attention to when reading a time series chart: trend, seasonality and noise. Write a short essay (~600 words) which discusses each of these features and explains why we need to pay attention to them.
Figures and examples should be included where appropriate.
Provide appropriate references and examples (including examples of figure(s)) to support your discussion.
