Cultural Literacies: Popular Music in Higher Education
Background: Our study of popular music and songs (particularly the examples from Levitin's The World In Six Songs) reveal to us the ways that cultural contexts lead to specifically chosen forms and methods of delivery as well as to certain interpretations of songs and performances. Considering how popular music (of women, men and groups) has historical referents and less well-known cultural associations enhances our understandings of these songs as they inform our everyday lives. In this paper, you will have the opportunity to analyze popular music as an undergraduate writer for a specific audience. Remember as you select your popular music songs that your goal is to practice using critical analysis and critical writing to generate new knowledge.
