Integrating academy learning with operational work is essential to transforming a recruit into a fully functional police officer. Due to their impact on the performance and behavior of the recruit, experienced field training officers (FTO) play a crucial role in this process. The challenging duty of guiding police recruits through the transition from the secure environment of the academy, where mistakes can be addressed, to the streets, where mistakes may be costly, is the responsibility of field training officers. One could argue that a police department's long-lasting quality is strongly tied to the caliber of its FTO program. Being a Field Training Officer and instructing new officers on how to perform their duties properly can be one of the most fulfilling jobs in all of law enforcement. FTO programs are the first step in an officer's career with a particular agency, and they establish the tone for that agency's culture and image. FTO programs have an impact on the agency's culture and reputation. The manner in which the next generation of law enforcement officials is trained sets the standard (Fagan, 1985). The most important programs for field training are those within an agency. It is the only program that can result in an internal transformation and build a division that is professional, moral, and focused on serving society as a whole.
In a situation where I witnessed a veteran officer use excessive force that resulted in an injury of a suspect, I would've reported it right away but the subculture is so strong in the criminal justice field and the code of silence is real. She probably feared what would happen to her career if she said anything. I think she should've talked to the veteran officer first to let him know that he was wrong and that she was going to report the incident. Things like the use of excessive force has to be stopped within. I feel she waited too long to report the incident but I'm glad she did when she felt she was ready.
"For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come" 1 Timothy 4:8. Physical training is good for the body, we are supposed to take care of our bodies, to be healthy so that we can carry out God's work. Physical fitness pales in significance when compared to godliness (i.e., being God-likeness), which affects one's existence both here on earth and in eternity. The same is true of pursuits related to retirement (Matt. 6:19-21), leisure (1 Timothy 5:6), housework (Luke 10:4-42), and even employment (John 6:27). All of these endeavors, however, are valid and even essential. So too with physical activity. Contrarily, exercise will help us become healthier both inside and out. It can boost our disposition and effectiveness as Christians. But it has to be maintained there, where it belongs. Let our devotion to God as Christians be the focus of our fanaticism if there is anything (Rom. 12:1-2). That is the secret to getting things to, well, "work out" and to be a strong effective leader.
