Currently I am working at reNEST Recovery Support Services. Previously we have been surveying our clients monthly with a staff-created survey so that our clients could track program progress. In addition to this survey, we were also conducting a quarterly client survey rating the services, facility, and staff as a way to hold us accountable to be able to better serve the clients. Because we are Joint Commission accredited and recently had our survey conducted, we had found out that the monthly client survey we were conducting was not sufficient because it was not a standardized tool. Since having our JC survey, we have implemented the use of the BAM-R which was available to us in our EMR system. The BAM-R is the continuous response version of the brief addiction monitor survey that asks 17 short simple questions about addiction that can be measured and compared over time (VISN 4 MIRECC, unknown). Utilizing this standardized tool will allow us to be compliant with the Joint Commission accreditation and will allow us to better serve the clients we work with.
Being Joint Commission accredited has helped me to see how important it is to utilize program evaluation tools and has made this class all the more interesting and useful to me. The owner of reNEST wants to hear from all the employees and because so many of us are in classes she appreciates the fresh educational feedback. We also provide an exit survey, or program completion survey similar to the one found on page 273 of our text that would be considered a summative instrument to find out about a person's discharge reason (rather it is completion or non-completion), and the services they received while they were here (Grinnell, 2019). The example in the text, however, does make me want to re-evaluate ours and make the questions a bit more survey friendly.
With all data being collected and measured in these surveys, this means feedback and constructive criticism and room for improvement for staff. Again, I have mentioned it before, reNEST is an accountability program; however, the accountability cannot simply be for the clients, the staff must have accountability as well. The surveys are an excellent way for the clients to express accountability to the staff.
