Cell & Molecular Biology
Level 7
Learning Outcome 1: Demonstrate an in depth knowledge of the molecular events driving cell behaviours, and how these may be altered in disease.
Learning Outcome 2: Evaluate techniques used in the study of molecular and cell biology, and consider how they develop knowledge of cellular function.
Learning Outcome 3: Apply knowledge of molecularand cell biology and information retrieved from scientific literature in problem-based exercises.
The study of cells and the processes that drive cellular behaviour is vital in understanding how organisms function in both healthy and diseased states. This module aims to provide a background into the molecular regulation of cell function, and explore how dysfunction leads to disease. Understanding of both cellular and molecular biology at a theoretical level will be supported by exploring experimental approaches used in the laboratory to probe the molecular basis of cellular behaviour.
Describe individual genes, through genomic regulation, to cell function, including:
• Cell structure, subcellular organelles and nuclear transport
• Genomic organisation & structure
• DNA replication, damage and repair
• Cell cycle& DNA replication
• Regulation of gene expression& epigenetics
• Genetic variation and mapping
