Advanced Organisational Behaviour
Assessment Instructions
Drawing on material from topics one through eleven and relevant chapters from Robbins et. al., (2019) AND your readings, provide a critical evaluation of the group within the broader organisational context. Thus, communication, leadership, power, politics, culture, change and relationship management will dominate the major thrust of this paper.
Assignment Objectives:
Question 1. Develop a deeper understanding of the group and the Organisation
Question 2. Commence a process of thinking about how this understanding might lead to a more informed and effective relationship with you, the group and the organisation
Question 3. Develop a more holistic grasp of the key role various OB concepts play in explaining how organisations work from a behavioural perspective
Task
Your primary goal in this assessment task is to conduct an in-depth analysis of the dynamics and functioning of a group within the broader functioning of the organisation.
Your analysis can include the use of assessment instruments (I again recommend Test123 which I provide a link to) and your textbook (but be careful and ethical in using these to evaluate people - please see final section of the assignment marking template, below, to be clear about using these) but you MUST contain the following four sections (suggested word limits in brackets below). Each section should be given a heading (for example: 2.
Organisational Background and Context); however, if you choose to use subheadings within each section you should avoid (when practical) labeling each and every paragraph as this tends to disrupt the overall flow and analysis.
Please:
1. Provide a background of the organisation including its core functions and area(s) of expertise. Then, describe the selected group's main role(s), goal(s) and actual contribution to the organisation (formally and/or informally if applicable). Here you need to explain why you think the group exists. (250 words approximately as this has been discussed partly in assignment 1 - I would expect new discussion here as a consequence of your learning) - Key points here are to provide an updated context using topics 6 to 11 to add new information. KEEP CONTEXT TO WORD COUNT
2. Detail and analyse the selected group's dynamics and functioning by using a wide range of OB related theories, concepts and ideas drawn from Topics 6 through 11 of the unit. Use well placed and applicable examples throughout to highlight and strengthen your discussion and analysis of critical events, issues, behaviours and/or interactions in the history of the group. Provide clear and logical links in this section with the previous sections, particularly section two. [2000-2500 - all word counts approximate].
3. Provide a concluding section that addresses how effective the group and the organisation are in accomplishing their goals, and achieving member satisfaction with the group. Also include in your discussion and analysis where you think the group and the organisation are performing well, where they might benefit from changes and/or improvements, and future considerations that provide a sense of where they are likely headed. Provide clear links in this final section to the rest of the assignment, particularly sections one and two. [250 words approximately]. Topics from all across the unit could apply here but topic 11 should be a key focus area
As you write, remember that sections 2 and 3 are the major sections of the assessment task for demonstrating your learning. Please also note that thorough referencing is expected in all if and when appropriate. Thorough referencing means anchoring your discussion and analysis to the academic literature; that is, your textbook, readings and additional references. Many organisations have a website and/or publicly available strategic documents and plans (even information brochures and marketing materials); such sources are likely to be very useful in writing section 1 and should be correctly referenced. To ensure confidentiality, names (of both individuals and the organisation) can be changed if you wish to do so. In section 3 when summarising key arguments raised throughout your essay, referencing is not required unless you are using a direct quote or introducing new material.
On the following pages introduce each section under clear bold separate headings. Please also insert your name, student number, assignment identification (e.g. MM405 Assignment 1) and the page numbers in a footer for all pages except the title page. Suggested headings list is below.
1. First Heading - Introduction. This will be very brief - one scene setting paragraph.
2. Second Heading - Organisational Background and Context.
3. Third Heading - Group Dynamics and Functioning (this should contain sub headings as indicated above, e.g. Group Dynamics and Communication)
4. Fourth Heading - Structure/Change
5. Fifth Heading - Summary and Conclusion
6. Sixth Heading -Reference List - This is a new page. Use the APA (7th) Style (footnoting is not accepted).
7. Seventh Heading - Appendix/Appendices (if appropriate)
