Assignment: Home Care Research

Part I

You are a group of entrepreneurs with a strong background in respiratory care. You are having a hard time finding work in a hospital setting. Your group decides to start its own home care company. You need to do your homework so that your company has the best chance for success. Your paper should discuss and explain each of the following questions in a discussion/paragraph format:

A. Reimbursement mechanisms both private and government. (Coding applies to diagnosis and the specific reimbursement)

B. Equipment needs, list ALL possible equipment needs. Describe the various types of oxygen delivery systems and the advantages and disadvantages to your company as well as the advantages and disadvantages of these systems for your patients.

C. Discuss Home Care accreditation by national agencies. (JCAHO, CHAP, etc.) and explain your answers.

D. Design a pulmonary home care program that can be used with home care equipment including maintenance and how often the patient / equipment should be checked. Be specific as to routine care, nutritional plans, follow-up to check progress plans, and the roles of other health care providers that may be needed to provide support for you and your patient.

E. Describe what education you will provide for your patient in the areas outlined in section D above.

Part II

Instructions

A. Design a detailed process flow map of the home care process from initial physician order through the home care order fulfillment / reimbursement until it reaches the patient. Select a specific category such as CPAP or home ventilator. Your paper should include:

B. Details that are criteria for an acceptable / qualifying order.

C. Identifying how orders are classified, coded and the allowables for the classification category.

D. A detailed outline of each step that the order needs to pass to end at the patient for a home medical device.

E. Outline of what is defined as acceptable use/ patient compliance.

F. Accompanied with this flow sheet should be a written paper explaining what is designated as patient compliance for your specified device from a selected payer source. How a home care company gets reimbursed for their products. How the disease process is coded to the medical devices and what that classification means in regards to getting additional medical devices of the same classification.
