Question: Draft a minimum of 14 lines and 2 stanzas. Regardless of how much you use the original source, the poem must contain a subject and a deeper subject. Include the title and, if available, a link to the original source.

Some instructions for writing a found poem:

  • Look through a novel or another already-written source (avoid an existing poem or song).
  • Decide what focus you want for the poem: mood, development of character, theme.
  • Select words and phrases that relate to your focus and write them down on a piece of paper.
  • Combine the words and phrases you have written into poetic form (lines and stanzas).
  • Reduce these lines, if necessary, to create a more concise and focused poem.
  • Remove words and change the original context of the words to create poem, as needed.
  • Repeat key words and phrases for emphasis, as needed.
