The lockdown of societies and economies throughout the world has been to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in order to save lives. Governments, including those in Canada, faced decisions on when and how to reopen those societies and economies. If there is a "Fourth wave" of COVID infections, those governments will have to consider going back to another lockdown.

In wrestling with those decisions, they need to confront the ethical question "How much should society be willing to sacrifice to save a life?"

Read this New York Times article. Provide an ethical analysis by applying both Kantian theory and utilitarianism. Also, provide your personal recommendation as to the appropriate ethical approach.
