Question: Find two reviews of the same subject ( a movie, a band, whatever) from two different sources: Yelp and Travel + Leisure, perhaps, or Salon and Time. Look over each source, considering both articles and ads, and decide what kind of audience each one addresses. Young? Affluent? Intellectual? A general audience? Then study each review. How much prior knowledge does each one expect of its readers? How much space is devoted to describing the subject, and how much to evaluate it? Do the two reviews use the same criteria- and if not, what might account for the difference? What does this analysis suggest about the role that the audience plays in the way reviews are written?
