Once we agree on how to define a "mass shooting", the next question becomes, how much of an issue are these mass shootings? Do we have more than in the past, or are they just covered and presented by the media now in a different way than before? How about our country compared to other developed countries? Again, this is an area with many different "sides", all pointing to different answers. Most can agree these events are rising in frequency, and our country has them at a much higher rate than others.
So, if we all agree how to define the problem, and that we have a problem, next we should look at the typical questions - Why? Why do these incidents happen? What can we do to help stop them from happening?
Obviously, there are no shortage of opinions on this topic, as to the cause and possible solutions. While many of the assailants in mass shootings have had some things in common (many have been described as loners, odd, friendless, etc.), they all have one thing in common - the assailants were somehow (legally or otherwise) able to access a firearm.
Many believe the next question then becomes - how do we try and keep firearms out of the hands of those who may want to commit these acts?
Please give some thoughts as to some suggestions you may have to limit these types of crimes. I think we all realize there is no way to stop them altogether, but there must be a better way to address them. Should more states look towards the High School Safety Act Florida recently passed that, among other things, gives police new tools to, at least temporarily, "take away" the guns of those deemed mentally unfit? Or how about Rhode Island's recent Red Flag law?
