Question: Fatigue is a national issue for EMS organizations. Fatigue has not always been a factor or had a potential effect on operations over the course of time, but it is receiving more attention today because of the number of vehicle incidents occurring where fatigue was a likely contributor. EMS personnel in many organizations, including fire departments, are reluctant to let go of 24-hour shifts and overtime pay that often accompanies it, even to their own potential detriment.

Consider your own organization. Based on your personal analysis, how much of a concern is fatigue in your organization? What other safety or risk issues are significant in your workplace?
