Many people tried to remain on their land after the Civil War, but over the next decades the racism, violence, and oppression became too great to remain. The migrants left everything they knew to migrate North or West, giving their tormentors the satisfaction of acquiring the land and farming equipment and anything remaining in the houses.

The cost in lives and fortunes was tremendous for Black families, with lynching and other forms of violence, and the color line creating limits to how much wealth they could acquire. The tale of African American life in the decades after the Civil War is one of survival and terror. What did you think of as you read these chapters and watched the video about how much has changed in the U.S. in a century?
