A stainless steel kettle (mass 0.5 kg, specific heat 0.40 kJ kg^-1 K^-1 ) was used to heat 2.0 litres (mass 2 kg) of water from room temperature (20o C, specific heat 4.19 kJ kg^-1 K^-1 ) to boiling point (100ºC).

(a) How much energy was added to the water in this process?

(b) How much energy was added to the kettle (excluding the water) in this process? The two litres of boiling water was then added to 1.0 litre of water at room temperature (20o C) in an open-topped thermally insulated jug.

(c) Calculate the final temperature of the mixed water. (Neglect the thermal properties of the water container.)

(d) Would the initial 1.0 litre of water at room temperature emit any thermal radiation? Explain your answer.
