At S-Mart department stores, new hires in the clothing department are initially given a folder of documents to read on their own. These documents include a complete catalogue of the clothing available for sale in the department and online, instructions on how to operate the cash register/point of sale machine and a list of all the company policies. The new employee then attends a one-day in-class training session where they take part in role-playing sessions to learn how to interact with and help customers and where they are shown how to operate the equipment. Usually by the next day they are deemed ready to be on the sales floor assisting customers.
