The purpose of your informative speech is to educate your audience about a topic of your choice. In this speech, you are not only helping your audience understand your topic, but you are also changing the way that they think, what they feel, or what they do.

Step 1:

When selecting a topic for your informative speech, you should begin by asking yourself a series of questions about each topic that you consider:

  1. Is this an appropriate topic for a informative speech? Or would it make more sense as a topic for a persuasive speech?
  2. Is this a topic in which I am interested? Is this topic important to me? Do I feel strongly about this topic and believe that it should be important to others?
  3. Will my audience be interested in this topic?
  4. How much does my audience already know about this topic?
  5. Can I make it clear that this is a speech that is necessary for my audience to hear? How can I make the case that this topic is relevant to them?
  6. Will informing my audience about this topic help somebody in some way?

Step 2:
Please answer the following questions:

  1. Write the specific purpose for your informative speech. This should be structured as it is in the lecture.
  2. Write the thesis statement for your speech. Likely, this thesis will change as you begin the writing process, but you need a working thesis before you begin so you have a clear direction in which to work.
  3. What pattern of organization are you planning to use for this? There may be more than one pattern that works and there isn't necessarily a right answer for which one to use, but you need to choose one pattern, as that will guide what main points you choose. Choosing 2 patterns means you're not completely sure what the structure for your main points is supposed to be.
  4. List out each of the three main points you're going to include. You don't need a lot of detail in here, but it should be clear what the main point is going to be about based on what you write. Make sure that your main points fit within the pattern of organization you choose. For example, if you choose a chronological pattern and your main points don't seem to follow a time-sequence, then your main points don't line up with your chosen pattern.
