Question: A researcher wants to know how much algae can grow in a 1 liter glass chemostat. She notices that the algae population stops growing after 24 hours. When she increases the concentration of nutrients in the inflow tube, the population size doesn't change. However, when she cleans the outside of the chemostat, the population grows larger. Is it possible that light was limiting growth of algae in the chemostat? (Select the best answer AND explanation.) No - light doesn't influence the growth rate of algae, so something else must have caused the population to grow. No - adding more nutrients didn't cause the algae population to grow, so there was no evidence that algal growth was limited. Yes - increasing nutrients did not result in additional algal growth, so the algae must have been limited by light. Yes - if cleaning the chemostat let more light in and if light was limiting algal photosynthesis, then increasing light would have increased algal growth.
