Operating Systems & Architecture / Networking & Virtualization
Install Operating System / Configure Network and Servers
This assessment is a practical hands-on assignment. The student will install a Server Operating System into 2 virtual machines using the Server 2016 ISO disk image. Once the OS is installed the student is to rename their servers. Next the student will network the two Servers together and test the connectivity. Finally, the student will provide answers to several research questions.
LO 4 - [Computing Architecture] Understand how modern computer systems and environments operate in regard to hardware and operating systems, their resource requirements, and limitations (Linked to PLO 4 (Stage 1/2 SLO 4))
LO 1 - [Networking & Virtualisation] Understand the fundamentals of computer networking
LO 4 - [Networking & Virtualisation] Design and build a virtual server
Using virtualization software, install Windows Server Operating System as specified:
You are an assistant to the network administrator at DigiTech corporation. Your manager needs you to demonstrate that you can create, configure and network two Server 2016 VMs. Use the Oracle Box hypervisor software, install the Server 2016 server operating system on to two virtual machines. Install the guest additions. Each Server only needs to have one NIC.
You will rename these servers & network them together.
TASK A: Renaming the servers
Once the two servers and the guest additions are installed, rename them as specified below:
The names for your Servers should use the following name format:
ServerA and ServerB followed by the last three digits of your student number.
For example, if your student number is 2020789 the first server should be named ServerA789. ServerA should be renamed using the Windows System properties.
ServerB should be renamed using the Windows PowerShell (using one PowerShell command). In your report include screen captures showing Server A & B names changed as specified.
TASK B: Network the two servers and assign the following IP address settings ServerA: IP-172.16.0.10 / subnet mask-255.255.0.0 / default gateway 172.16.0.1 / DNS 172.16.0.10 ServerB: IP-172.16.0.20 / subnet mask-255.255.0.0 / default gateway 172.16.0.1 / DNS 172.16.0.10
TASK C: Use networking best practices to configure the firewall to allow PING to pass through the ICMP port and show that the servers can PING each other by their IP addresses. Explain why the port exception is better than turning off the firewall.
Provide a section on troubleshooting in your report that which includes any and all technical problems that had to be solved during this assignment
Conduct research and explain the following topics (in your own words... no cut and paste!):
TASK D: Network Technology research topics: Explain what RFC 1918 is and why it is important for use in modern Local Area Networks.
TASK E: Computer Architecture research topics: Explain the relationship between Fault Tolerance and High Availability for network servers.
For maximum credit provide examples and cite all your reference from peer reviewed sources.
Challenge Task: DigiTech needs a Web Site set up with a simple 1-page home page. Use the IIS and DNS software to set up the DigiTech web site.
