Question: Upcoding can include billing for more expensive services or even more serious diagnoses than what the patient had. Since upcoding increases the cost of payments on claims, it can end up having an effect on the cost of insurance coverage or reducing coverage for patients due to the unnecessary spending. When discussing government programs like Medicare and Medicaid, this means that upcoding is essentially stealing funds from government programs that are funded by tax-payer money.
