Assignment: American Studies
Read this for some context!
We've explored how dramatic social, political, and economic transitions influenced the experiences of African Americans, and America more broadly, in the wake of emancipation. We've examined the historical record amassed as a result of Black migrations out of the south; the ways that cities responded to this migration; and forms of Black resistance enacted in response to efforts to reconstitute White supremacy following emancipation.
Your essay should begin with a definition of The Great Migration/The Great Exodus and a description of how other themes (e.g., The Negro Problem; Confronting the Violence of White Supremacy; and/or Black resistance) relate to this overarching theme.
To begin, use the library guide page to locate a collection/archive. Describe the collection/archive: what is it, what does it include (letters, newspaper articles, images, etc.).
(Say you used proquest, which is the UC berkeley library extension and you used it to filter for articles.)
From this collection/archive, select one or more primary source(s). Describe the primary source: what is it, who produced it, time period, etc. - be specific
(The first two pdfs attached are primary sources that you can take a look at)
Contextualize the material within key themes and concepts from readings and class discussions:
The Great Migration/The Great Exodus (pull/push)
The "Negro Problem"
1. The Violence of Whiteness (Racial Terror: Lynching, race riots, ordinary violence)
2. Black resistance
3. Be sure to highlight key points, aspects, perspectives, comments, etc. that are significant in the story that the object you selected tells about these themes.
4. Provide a reflection on what you learned from this exercise: What surprised you? What questions came up for you? How might it make you think differently about the experiences of people in the Great Migration and/or your experience?
