Case Study: You are a sociologist who has designed a research study to investigate stereotype threat. stereotype treat is a phenomenon in which negative stereotypes about marginalized groups can negatively impact their performance. Your study's experiment all design involves selecting two groups of college students, with roughly even numbers of females and males. You will administer the same math test, which assesses basic statistical knowledge, to both groups. ?one group will be given no specific instructions before the test. The other group will be too that "women usually do poorly on this test" just before they begin. This statement is a lie. The test a administrator, your confederate and an authority figure to the test-takers, will present this lie to the test-takers as true. Because your research involves human participants, your university requires that their institutional review Board(IRB) approve it. The IRB is slow, and you have only limited time to complete your study. Do you fill out the necessary forms and submit your research study to your university's Institutional Review board?

Question: Debriefing the participants at the conclusion of the research study aligns to the ethical principle "do no harm." In what ways could these participants be harmed if they are not debriefed after your study on stereotype threat? Why is some level of deception necessary in this type of research? Why is voluntary participation necessary in this type of research - how might involuntary participation affect the result.
