Defining Work
Case 1: Aaron has been playing the video game Fortnite on live streams with a growing group of friends and fans for a couple of years. He used to work at a warehouse, but on a lucky break, his livestreaming became super popular and he started receiving offers from advertisers to sponsor him to play. He quit his warehouse job and now plays Fortnite for pay at least 40 hours a week. Aaron's father is very confused by his son's job choices, and is happy his son is making money, but tells Aaron that this isn't a real job and it's not work.
Potential.
Question 1: How might Aaron use Nick Smith's definition of "work" to persuade his father that his streaming is work?
(1) Explain all parts of the definition, and
(2) Use information from the case to apply the definition to Aaron's situation.
Case 2: Yan is a serial killer. She loves killing people; it's her favorite hobby. She thinks she is doing the world a favor by reducing population density, especially with climate change happening and only getting worse. Her routine is that she will drive up and down the highways in northern California and pick up hitch-hikers, then take them to her murder bunker. Sometimes they are not happy about it and she has to wrestle them. But she always wins because she has been exercising (especially lifting and cardio) to get better at her hobby and save the planet. However, one of the hitch-hikers last week told Yan that she needed to stop being a menace to society and get a job. That hurt her feelings.
Question 2: How might Yan use Nick Smith's definition of "work" to argue that what she does is work?
(1) Explain all parts of the definition, and
(2) Use information from the case to apply the definition to Yan's situation.
