Assignment:
1) This assignment, I would like you to consider how mental illness and mental health treatment and professionals are represented in popular media. Specifically, I would like to identify a movie, television show, or play that has a character with a "mental illness" and address each of
the following:
Describe, briefly , the source material and character.
What is the character's diagnosis according to the source material
What does the source material use to convey the character's mental illness portrayed (Actions? Words? What the character says? What the character doesn't say?)?
Essentially, how does the material show you that this person is "mentally ill"?
Do the character's actions match up with the DSM-5 description of their diagnosis?
o If, in your appraisal, the character's diagnosis DOESN'T match the DSM-5 description, what would be the more accurate diagnosis? (Consider that "no diagnosis" is also an option)
o If the character's diagnosis is no longer included in the DSM, what is the current terminology for their diagnosis?
What do you think of the portrayal of the particular mental illness in the source material?
Do the creators portray it accurately? Fairly? Is the tone sympathetic? Mocking? Hostile?
In addition to the source material, read the article attached to this assignment, "Understanding the Impact of Stigma on People with Mental Illness" and address the following questions.
Do you feel that this character contributes to or lessens stigma surrounding mental illness? Why?
What changes would you want to see made to the portrayal of the character in order to address the problems of stigmatized views of people with a mental illness.
