Assignment

The SIR model is used to predict the spread of an infectious disease in a population.

A fraction of the population has been vaccinated and rest is unvaccinated. The disease is then introduced into the population and begins to spread.

The purpose of this assignment is to determine whether the main cause for the spread of the disease is unvaccination or increased social activity among the vaccinated.

Steps

1. Case #1. Set a = 0.

2. Use MATLABto solve the system of ODEs.

3. Plot a graph of I1 and I2 vs time for the first 350 days.

4. How many total (cumulative) infections occurred among the vaccinated and unvaccinated during the first 350 days of the disease?

5. Case #2. Set V = 0.00001 and a = 0.
Repeat steps 2 - 4.
This gives us the results for a totally unvaccinated population.

6. Case #3. Set V back to the original value, and a = 0.5.
Repeat steps 2 - 4.
This gives us the results if the vaccinated increased their social activity by 50%.

7. Case #4. Set V to the original value, and a = 1.
Repeat steps 2 - 4.
This gives us the results if the vaccinated increased their social activity by 100%.

8. Based on your results, which produces a greater spread of the disease - having no vaccination or increased social activity among the vaccinated?
Write your program to display the text of your answer to this question.

9. Present your results in the attached form
