In hindsight, Israel seems like a poor choice for God's chosen people. How many times did they break God's heart?! Even Moses makes it clear that God did not choose them because they were such a good people; rather, they were a "stiff-necked people" Deuteronomy 9:4-6 (New International Version). With this in mind, why did God form the nation of Israel, give them their own land, and maintain his promises to them despite their rebellion against him? Why Israel? What was God thinking?!
