Case Study: A student would like to test a hypothesis about whether self-identified men and women differ in terms of their romantic beliefs. However, to assess the level of romantic beliefs held by both groups, the student first wants to use the psychometric approach to constructing a measure of romantic beliefs. The student first concentrates on creating predictive validity by watching Disney movies involving romances and writing 10 items they believe reflect the concept of 'romanticism'. To test whether those items are all measuring the same thing, the student then assesses test-retest reliability by correlating half the items with the other half of the items. Both halves of the scale correlated at .93 indicating the test was valid. The student also asked participants to report how many relationships they had been in. The student finds a correlation between these two measures of -.65 and interprets this as the more people have romantic beliefs, the more relationships they have. Based on this, the student concludes the test has reliability.
