Question

Part of the motivation of projects like SETI (the Search for Extraterrestrial Life) is the belief that statistically it is very likely that Earth is not the only planet in the universe with life. But how many planets are likely to have life? Where do astronomers get the statistics? This exercise will walk you through two ways to estimate the number of intelligent alien civilizations in our galaxy and how far away they are. The first is called the Drake Equation, and the second is called the Astrobiological Copernican Limits.
