A gene has six exons, labeled 1 through 6. The mRNA transcript of this gene can be spliced in several ways, but to produce a functional protein, each mRNA must have exactly three exons, two of which must be 2 and 4. Hint to answer the following questions:

  1. How many different mRNAs can be produced from this gene, and what are they?
  2. If all genes in this organism were capable of producing this same number of mRNAs, how may genes would the organism need to produce 100,000 different polypeptides?
