Problem: A compacted fill is to be constructed to support a new highway. The fillmaterial will be taken from a location ("borrow pit") where the in-place dry unitweight is 100 pcf and the water content is 10%. The soil will be excavated fromthe borrow pit, moistened to increase the water content to 12% and thencompacted to a final dry unit weight of 120 pcf. The total final volume of thecompacted fill will be 250,000 yd3.

Required:

Question 1: How many cubic yards of soil must be excavated from the borrow pit?

Question 2: How many gallons of water must be added to the excavated soil to raisethe water content to the proper value?
